Yes, they exist — look for hats actually labeled “crushable” or “packable.” The trick is the material: natural straw that’s been softened or synthetic straw (like paper straw or polyester) that bounces back. Real stiff straw hats? Those will crack in luggage. Skip them.

The two reliable types are packable straw (usually a flat-brimmed fedora or a foldable wide-brim) and fabric sun hats with a wire rim. Fabric hats can be squished flat, and the wire pops back into shape. The straw ones need to be specifically crushable — they often come rolled or folded. Brands like Wallaroo, San Diego Hat Co., and a few others make them. You don’t need to spend a fortune.

One note: even a “crushable” hat will look better if you pack it on top of clothes, not under a heavy bag. But that’s true for everything.
