Daisy-chaining extension cords and power strips is a bad idea.

No. It’s not safe. Do not plug a power strip or surge protector into an extension cord.

The problem is that extension cords are not designed for the continuous load of a power strip. Power strips trip if overloaded, but an extension cord just gets hot. You’re adding resistance and length, which can cause voltage drop and overheating, especially with high-draw devices like space heaters, computers, or fridges. That’s how fires start.

If you truly need more outlets farther from the wall, get a longer, heavy-duty extension cord (12-gauge or thicker) and plug devices directly into it. Or install an actual outlet. But don’t stack extension cords and power strips like Lego. It’s not worth the risk.

One exception: if you’re just powering a single low-wattage device (a lamp, a phone charger) for a short period, it probably won’t catch fire. But that’s still a bad habit. Just don’t.
