David Gilmour's Personal Philanthropy: Selling Guitars for Climate, Supporting Refugees

The most striking example of Gilmour acting alone, outside Pink Floyd’s collective brand, came in 2019 when he auctioned off 126 of his guitars—including his iconic Black Strat—and donated the entire £3.6 million haul to the environmental law charity ClientEarth. He said he’d rather the instruments help fight climate change than sit in a vault. That wasn’t a band decision; it was purely his own conscience at work.

He’s also been a vocal, personal advocate for refugees. In 2015 he joined a protest outside the Home Office against UK refugee policy, and in 2018 he publicly tore into Donald Trump’s immigration stance. Politically, he’s backed Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party and wrote an op-ed in 2019 condemning the Israeli government’s treatment of Palestinians—again, separate from any Floyd-sanctioned activism. These moves come from his own convictions, not a group memo.
