David Gilmour’s Solo Recording Experiment: ‘Fat Old Sun’

“Fat Old Sun” was David Gilmour’s first real attempt at recording a Pink Floyd song entirely by himself, and it sounds like it. While the rest of Atom Heart Mother is weighed down by brass bands, choirs, and orchestral overdubs that the band didn’t fully control, this track is just Gilmour working alone in the studio. He played acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, drums, and sang the lead vocal — the only thing missing was a second pair of hands.

The mix is noticeably drier and more intimate than the rest of the album. Where the side-long “Atom Heart Mother Suite” uses heavy reverb and dense multi-tracking to create a grand, cinematic feel, “Fat Old Sun” keeps everything close and clean. Gilmour’s acoustic strums sit right in the center, his slow electric solo slides across the stereo field, and the drums are punchy but not washed out. The result is a quiet, pastoral folk-rock piece that feels more like a demo than a finished album track — and that’s exactly what makes it stand out.
