DDR5 is the safer long-term bet.

Yes, platform longevity matters, and DDR5 is the better long-term investment. Intel’s current LGA1700 supports both DDR4 and DDR5, but future sockets — and AMD’s AM5 — are DDR5-only. You don’t want to be the person stuck with unusable RAM in two years just to save forty bucks today.

The real question is timing. DDR5 prices have dropped a lot, but they’re still slightly higher than DDR4 for comparable speeds. The difference isn’t huge anymore — maybe $20-30 for a 32GB kit. If you’re building a new PC today, especially with a mid-range or better CPU, just go DDR5. You’ll get better performance now and your next motherboard won’t force a full RAM replacement.

If you’re on a tight budget and building a low-end machine, DDR4 still works fine. But that’s a corner case. For anyone planning to keep the rig for 4+ years or upgrade the CPU later, DDR5 is the obvious choice.

Don’t save pennies now and pay dollars later.
