Dedicated insulin coolers exist, but a cheap lunch bag works fine.

Yes, there are coolers built specifically for insulin and other meds. Frio packs, Medicool, and 4AllFamily all make them. They work. But if you’re just taking your insulin to work or on a weekend trip, you don’t need a specialist product.

The key is temperature control, not brand. Insulin degrades above 86°F and freezes below 36°F. A standard insulated lunch bag with two re-freezable gel packs (wrapped in a cloth so they don’t directly touch the vials) does the job just as well. The dedicated coolers add a thermometer or a more consistent cooling rate, but for a few hours of transport, you’re fine with the cheap route.

If you’re traveling overseas or leaving insulin in a hot car all day, then spend on a proper medical cooler. Otherwise, save your money. A $10 bag and $5 worth of ice packs will protect your medication.
