Dehumidifier. Full stop.
Yes, run a dehumidifier continuously during wet months, and fix any water entry points first.
Moisture is the only thing mold and mildew need to thrive. Spring rains mean more humidity seeping through concrete walls and floors, condensation on cold pipes, and water pooling around the foundation. A dehumidifier pulls that moisture out of the air before it becomes a problem. Set it to 50% humidity or lower and empty the bucket regularly—or get one that drains into a floor drain.
But don’t skip the basics: make sure your gutters and downspouts are clear and extend at least six feet away from the foundation. Check the grading around your house—soil should slope away, not toward the basement. Seal any cracks in the foundation or around windows. A dehumidifier can’t keep up if you’re actively letting water in.
Your nose will thank you.
