Delete the bad ones first, then back up once
The best way to sort and back up your phone photos without losing memories is to delete the obvious junk first, then do a single organized backup.
Most people’s camera rolls are 80% garbage: blurry shots, accidental screenshots, five identical photos of the same thing, and receipts you don’t need. Go through and delete those ruthlessly. You won’t miss them, and it makes everything else manageable. If you’re worried about deleting a memory, ask yourself: would I actually show this to someone? If not, it’s clutter.
After the purge, organize by year or major event, then back up to one place. Google Photos or iCloud are fine if you already pay for storage. If you want more control, dump everything into a folder on your computer with a simple naming scheme like “2025-03-RoadTrip.” One backup is enough as long as it’s not the only copy. Don’t overthink it with multiple services and OCD-level tagging. Memories aren’t lost because you didn’t categorize them by subfolder—they’re lost when you never look at them again.
Future you will thank you for not hoarding 50 nearly identical sunset photos.
