Desoldering RAM is a motherboard killer.
High risk — you’re more likely to destroy the board than save money.
The problem is that memory chips are soldered with lead-free solder that melts at high temps, and they sit on multilayered boards with tiny copper traces that peel off if you breathe on them wrong. Even with a decent hot air station, you need experience, good flux, and the right nozzle to avoid lifting pads or cooking adjacent components.
One slip, and you’ve got a dead board with no recovery. Not a fun afternoon.
Most people who attempt this are trying to upgrade a soldered-on laptop, thinking it’ll be like swapping RAM on a desktop. It’s not. Laptop boards are thin, compact, and unforgiving. The repair shops that do this successfully charge for a reason.
If you need more RAM, either buy a laptop that supports upgrades or get one with enough from the start. This is not where you save money.
