Ditch the bags — use boxes and wraps

Ditching single-use plastic bags for lunch is easy once you switch to a few reusable containers.

The simple move is a bento box or stainless steel container. It replaces the baggie for the whole meal: sandwich, fruit, crackers, done. One box, no bags, and it stacks in the fridge better than a crumpled plastic sack ever did.

For things that used to live in a baggy — sandwiches, cheese, bread — beeswax wraps or vegan wax wraps work great. They mold around food with the heat of your hands and last a year or two. Silicone bags like Stasher are the other option if you want something zippered, and they handle wet stuff like cut fruit without leaking.

Don’t feel like you need to buy a whole kit. Three pieces cover most lunches: one main container, one small container for wet snacks, one wrap for the sandwich. Add a cloth napkin if you feel fancy. Everything washes and gets reused tomorrow.

You don’t need to pack a perfect zero-waste lunch every day. Just start with one container replacing one bag.

Your lunch will survive the commute better in a hard box anyway.
