Ditch the cooler, pack smarter

You handle a no-cooler lunch box by picking foods that don’t need chilling and packing them so they don’t get crushed.

The main trick is to stop thinking like you’re packing a fridge lunch. Instead, go for shelf-stable stuff: hard cheese like cheddar, cured meat like salami, peanut or almond butter, whole fruit (apples, oranges, bananas), nuts, trail mix, tortillas, crackers, and maybe a few squares of dark chocolate. These all survive a day without refrigeration, and most survive two or three if you’re smart about it.

Eat the things that won’t hold forever first—apples and cheese are fine on day one, but by day three the cheese gets sweaty and the apple gets mealy. Keep cured meats and nut butter for later. Also, bring a frozen water bottle. It’s not a cooler, but it acts like one: wrap it in a bandana, throw it in the bag, and it keeps things cooler for hours while it thaws. By lunch you’ve got cold water too. Can’t beat that.

One more thing: pack sturdy foods on the bottom, soft things on top. Tortillas survive a squeeze, but bananas don’t. And skip anything with mayo or raw fish unless you like food poisoning on a mountain.

Your lunch will be fine as long as you’re not packing mayo.
