Ditch the lunch box. Pack a soft bag.
Ditch the lunch box. Pack your trail food in soft-sided containers and reusable wraps, because hard plastic and glass will wreck your pack weight before you even start walking.
For wraps, the best move is to roll them tight in parchment paper, foil, or a beeswax wrap. They stay intact, take up almost no space, and can be squished into the side of your pack. Silicone bags like Stashers are great too, but they’re heavier than foil. Use those for things that leak, like cut fruit or hummus.
Fruit should stay whole whenever possible. Apples, oranges, and bananas need zero containers and add zero trash. If you insist on pre-cut fruit, a thin plastic or silicone container is fine. Just don’t take glass. Glass is the enemy of a lightweight day pack, and one bump spills your trail mix for the afternoon.
One trick: pack dense, heavy stuff like apples on top so you eat them first. Near the top of your bag, not buried under everything. Then the weight disappears before you hit the steep part.
Your pack will be lighter, your trash bag smaller, and your sandwich won’t be a flat disaster by mile three.
