Ditch the lunchbox. Bring a cooler bag.

A cooler bag is the right answer for a beach day — hard lunchboxes with compartments trap heat and let sand in through the cracks.

First, insulation. A lunchbox is basically a box. A cooler bag, even a cheap one, holds cold much longer, especially if you freeze a couple of ice packs and keep the bag in the shade under a towel. The zipper seal also keeps warmer air out better than a hinged lid.

Second, sand. Compartments sound useful, but they’re just more edges for sand to sneak into. The real move is to pack everything inside in ziplock bags or small containers. That way, even if sand gets into the bag, it never touches the food. A soft-sided cooler with a good zipper seals far tighter than any lunchbox lid.

One more trick: open the bag under a towel or facing away from the wind. Sand is wind-driven, not gravity-driven.

A cold, sand-free sandwich is the whole beach lunch victory.
