Ditch the Sandwich, Not the Lunch
If your preschooler refuses sandwiches, stop offering the sandwich and build a lunch from little snacky bits instead.
Picky kids like control and small portions. A sandwich is one big thing they can reject all at once. A bento-style lunch with separate compartments gives them the power to choose what to eat and leave the rest. That alone reduces the standoff.
You don’t need to get fancy. Just think in components: a protein (cheese cubes, hard-boiled egg, yogurt, chicken meatballs), a carb (crackers, pretzels, mini muffins, tortilla strips), a fruit or veg (berries, apple slices, cucumber rounds, cherry tomatoes), and a dip (hummus, ranch, apple sauce). Put them in a compartmented box or even a muffin tin. Let them dip, stack, or eat each piece separately. It feels like playing, and that’s the point.
You can even let a few things be “new” and keep the rest reliable. The goal is a lunch that comes home mostly eaten, not a Pinterest spread. And if they only eat the crackers some days, that’s fine too.
Future you will be glad you stopped making sad, rejected sandwiches.
