Don't attempt without practice and a proper station.
Pretty high, honestly. BGA rework on soldered RAM isn’t a simple swap — you’re dealing with hundreds of tiny solder balls under a chip, and a motherboard that absorbs heat unevenly. One wrong temperature curve and you’ve lifted a pad or cooked a nearby component.
Most damage happens from:
- Uneven heating – warps the board or cracks the BGA package.
- Too much heat – melts internal traces or pops capacitors.
- Lifting pads – if the chip pulls off before the solder is fully liquid.
If you’ve done BGA rework before and own a proper rework station (not a hot air gun from Amazon), the odds drop. If this is your first time, assume you’ll kill the board. Practicing on dead laptops first is the only smart way.
