Don't bother draining the winter bar oil

Leaving the remaining winter-weight bar oil in the tank is totally fine. You don’t need to tilt the saw, catch oil in a pan, or make a mess over this.

Winter bar oil is just thinner so it flows in the cold. Once the weather warms up, it still lubricates fine. The only real downside is it flings off the chain a little faster in heat, so you might check the oil level a bit more often. That’s not a problem, that’s just how it works.

When the tank gets low, refill with whatever grade you normally use for the season. The two will mix in the tank without issue. There’s no chemical reaction, no sludge, no harm.

If you’re putting the saw away for months, same deal: oil in the tank is fine, even helpful, because it keeps moisture out. Just make sure the tank cap is snug.

Nine times out of ten, draining a bar oil tank is busywork you’re allowed to skip.
