Don't buy board shorts without a drawstring and stretch.
Yes, drawstring and four-way stretch are non-negotiable. In the water, a non-adjustable waistband will slide down or dig in. Drawstring lets you cinch exactly where you need it. Stretch is what lets you paddle hard without feeling like you’re wearing a board made of cardboard.
Also pay attention to inseam length. Too short and they’ll ride up awkwardly. Too long and they’ll bunch around your knees. For surfing and paddleboarding, 3 to 5 inches is the sweet spot — enough coverage to stay put, short enough to move.
Quick-dry fabric is standard these days, but skip cargo pockets. They trap water and create drag. One small zip pocket for a key is fine. Anything else is just noise.
Your board shorts shouldn’t be a distraction while you’re trying to catch a wave.
