Don't buy soldered RAM if you plan to upgrade.

No. Get a laptop with RAM slots instead.

Soldered RAM is permanent. If you buy a laptop with 8GB soldered and think you’ll add another stick later, you’re stuck if there’s no second slot. Even if there is a slot, your upgrade path is limited by the soldered amount. Want 32GB total? That 8GB soldered chip is now a bottleneck because you can only match it with another 8GB stick for dual channel (if you’re lucky). Or worse, they soldered both sticks and left you with zero slots.

Laptops with removable RAM are becoming rarer, but they still exist. Look for models with two SODIMM slots or at least one slot plus a soldered base. If you’re serious about upgrading down the road, pay a little more upfront for the flexibility.

Future you will thank you when swapping RAM takes five minutes instead of buying a whole new laptop.
