Don’t let the ice pack touch the insulin pen.

The safest way to pack an insulin pen for a school day is to keep it cool but not frozen, which means putting something between the pen and the ice pack.

An insulated lunch box with a small ice pack works fine. Just don’t set the pen directly on the ice — freezing is what ruins insulin. Wrap the pen in a cloth, a paper towel, or keep it in its original case, then put it next to the ice pack, not underneath it. If the lunch box has a separate pocket or a divider, use that.

For most kids, a regular school day is only a few hours. Insulin is fine at room temperature up to about 86°F (30°C), and the ice pack just keeps the inside of the bag cool enough without needing to be freezing. If you’re dealing with a long day or hot climate, a cooling case like a Frio pack works great — it activates with water but never gets cold enough to freeze.

Also, put the pen somewhere visible, not under a heavy water bottle or buried in applesauce. You want it cool, not crushed.
