Don’t run a salt water chlorine generator in cold water.

No. Most manufacturers say the water needs to be at least 50–60°F (10–15°C). Run it colder and you risk damaging the cell, getting zero chlorine output, or building up scale that’s a pain to clean.

The chemistry just doesn’t work well below that range. The salt cell needs enough conductivity and temperature to produce chlorine efficiently. Cold water slows the reaction way down, and the system might keep trying to run, which wears it out faster.

If your pool or spa is under 50°F, just turn the SWG off and shock manually when needed. It’ll keep your cell alive longer and save you the headache of replacing it early.

Future you will thank you for not testing this.
