Don't skip the DE after backwashing.
Not complicated, but there’s one step people mess up all the time.
The proper sequence: turn off the pump, set the valve to backwash, turn pump on and run until the sight glass runs clear (usually 2-3 minutes). Then shut pump off, set valve to rinse, run for 30 seconds to settle the grids. Shut pump off, set valve to filter, then add fresh DE through the skimmer.
The part everyone forgets? Adding the DE. A backwash dumps all the old diatomaceous earth. If you go straight back to filtering without adding more, your filter is basically useless and your pool will go cloudy fast.
Measure the right amount (usually 1 pound per 10 square feet of filter area, but check your manual) and pour it slowly into the skimmer while the pump is running.
You only need to backwash when the pressure gauge reads 8-10 psi over clean pressure. Doing it too often wastes DE and water.
Do it right, and your filter works perfectly all season. Skip the DE, and you’ll be backwashing again in two days.
