Don't soak the wooden lunch box
The safest way to clean a wooden lunch box is to wash it by hand with mild soap and warm water, dry it off immediately, and never let it soak.
Wood is basically a sponge. Let it sit in water and it absorbs unevenly, which is what causes warping and cracks. And bacteria? They thrive in wet wood, not dry wood. So the enemy isn’t dirt — it’s water hanging around.
A quick wash with regular dish soap and warm water is plenty. Rinse, towel dry, then stand it on its edge with the lid off so the rest air-dries fast. No dishwasher, ever — the heat and detergent wreck both the wood and the glue. Skip bleach and harsh citrus cleaners too; they strip the wood and leave residue.
If you want to sanitize or kill smells, wipe the inside with a 1:3 vinegar-water mix and let it dry. Then, once in a while, rub in food-safe mineral oil or beeswax to keep the surface sealed and less absorbent.
Treat it like a cast iron skillet: wash fast, dry fast, oil it now and then.
