Don't trust the compartments — double-contained is the only fix
The only reliable way to stop salad dressing and yogurt from painting your backpack is to double-contain them inside the lunch box.
Those built-in compartments look sealed, but most of them are not actually leakproof. One jostle in your bag and the dressing finds the tiny seam between the lid and the wall, and boom — your geometry notebook smells like balsamic for the rest of the semester.
So don’t rely on the lunch box itself. Put the wet stuff in its own small leakproof container — like a 2-oz sauce container, a silicone cup with a lid, or a tiny glass jar with a tight seal — before it goes into the compartment. That way, even if the compartment leaks, the liquid is still trapped in a second layer.
You can also freeze yogurt or dressing the night before. It buys you a few hours of forgiveness, but it’s not a permanent fix once it thaws. And if you want real peace of mind, carry the whole lunch box inside an insulated tote with a wipeable liner. Then the worst case is a mess you can wipe down instead of a ruined backpack.
Your backpack’s bottom deserves better than a vinaigrette baptism.
