Don't try to 'catch up' — just do today.

To rebuild a broken habit streak, stop trying to make up for lost days and just do the next smallest version of the habit. The all-or-nothing trap convinces you that a missed day means you failed, so you might as well quit entirely. That’s nonsense.

Your streak is not the habit. It’s a tracking tool, not a moral scoreboard. When you break it, your brain wants to either double down (do twice as much tomorrow) or give up entirely. Both are the same trap: they treat the streak as the goal instead of the practice.

Q1 is actually the perfect time to reset because the pressure is lower. Nobody expects you to have a 365-day streak in January. So here’s what works: acknowledge the break without apology, then do the smallest possible action. If you were reading 20 pages a day, read one page. If you were running 3 miles, just put your shoes on and walk to the end of the block. Do that for three days. Then slowly ramp back up.

The habit doesn’t care about your calendar. It cares about showing up today, small, and again tomorrow.
