Don’t use extension cords for permanent landscape lighting.
No. Even in conduit, extension cords aren’t rated for permanent burial or long-term outdoor use. They lack the proper insulation, UV resistance, and water-blocking compounds that UF (underground feeder) cable or direct-bury landscape wire have.
The National Electrical Code (NEC) requires listed cable for underground installations. Extension cords are designed for temporary, above-ground use. Putting one in conduit doesn’t magically make it code-compliant. Conduit protects from physical damage but doesn’t fix the insulation issue — and moisture inside the conduit can still degrade an extension cord over time.
If you want permanent landscape lighting, buy UF cable or the appropriate gauge landscape wire. It’s not much more expensive, and it’ll last decades instead of catching fire or tripping breakers the first time a gopher chews through the insulation.
Your yard deserves the right stuff.
