Double cleanse, but go gentle

Double cleansing is the right move after snow or wind, but you need to choose products carefully to avoid stripping your skin.

Outdoor exposure in cold, windy, or snowy conditions means your face is carrying sunscreen, possibly heavy moisturizer, and whatever environmental grit got thrown at it. A single cleanse often won’t cut it, and scrubbing harder just irritates already stressed skin.

Start with an oil or balm cleanser. That first pass dissolves sunscreen, sebum, and any waxy residue without needing friction. Rinse it off. Then follow with a gentle, non-foaming water-based cleanser — something with a low pH and no sulfates. This removes any leftover film without stripping your moisture barrier.

If your skin feels tight or red after cleansing, you went too harsh. Scale back: skip the second cleanse or swap to a milky cleanser. Double cleansing is not mandatory every time, but after serious wind or snow exposure it helps a ton. Just keep both steps gentle.

Your skin is already fighting the elements.
