Drain the cover first, then zip the ties.

Take it slow and drain the standing water off the cover before you touch a single anchor.

Safety covers are thick and heavy, and the water on top can weigh hundreds of pounds. If you try to pull it with that water still there, you’ll either rip the fabric or throw your back out. Get a small submersible pump or a cover pump if you have one. Pump until it’s mostly dry, then go around and remove the anchors or straps. Don’t just yank them all off at once—work from one side to the other, releasing tension gradually.

Once the cover is loose, fold it carefully onto itself rather than dragging it across the deck. Dirt and debris left on top will scratch the surface or end up in your pool. Hose it off, let it dry, then store it in a bin out of the sun.

Future you will thank present you when next spring’s unveiling takes twenty minutes instead of two hours.
