Drones can target mosquitoes without carpet-bombing

Drones and aerial spraying play a targeted but contentious role in modern mosquito control, mostly for large-scale outbreaks in inaccessible areas.

The main use is larvicide application over wetlands, marshes, or rice paddies where ground crews can’t easily go. Drones drop pellets or liquid that kill larvae before they become flying adults. For adult mosquitoes, aerial spraying (from planes or drones) is used during disease outbreaks like West Nile or dengue, when you need to knock down the population fast.

The advantage of drones over crop-dusters is precision. A drone can fly low, follow terrain, and apply chemicals only where needed. That means less drift, less waste, and fewer impacts on bees and butterflies. Some programs use drones equipped with thermal cameras to find water sources at night.
