To keep a stainless steel lunch box spot-free and rust-free, dry it thoroughly with a soft cloth right after washing—air-drying is what causes the spots.

Water spots are just minerals from tap water left behind when droplets evaporate. Dry it off and they never get a chance to form. Rust is rarer but happens when the metal stays wet too long, or if you go at it with steel wool and kill the protective layer.

Use mild dish soap and a soft sponge. Skip the dishwasher—that’s a fast track to spotting and dullness. If you already have spots, a quick wipe with white vinegar or a dab of stainless steel cleaner will bring it back.
