Dry your bento box before you put it away

The best way to keep mold out of a bento box’s folds is to dry every seam and groove thoroughly before you store it.

Mold needs two things: spores and moisture. Bento boxes trap moisture in the silicone gaskets, hinge crevices, and divider slots. If you dry the outside but leave the folds damp, you’re basically running a mold nursery.

The practical trick is to not rush the drying. After washing, give every part a wipe with a clean towel, then let it sit open on the counter for an hour. If you’re storing it right away, make sure the lid is slightly ajar or the internal parts are separated so air can circulate. For stubborn water in the gasket, a cotton swab or a paper towel corner works fine.

If you already see a little mold, vinegar or a dilute bleach wipe will kill it, but that’s cleanup — prevention is all about denying it moisture. Get into the habit of air-drying before assembly and you’ll likely never deal with it.

It’s a ten-second habit that saves you from a gross surprise.
