ECC memory won't fix your DVR recording errors.
Probably not. Recording errors are almost never caused by memory bit flips.
ECC memory corrects single-bit errors in RAM. Those errors are extremely rare in normal operation — even running 24/7, you’d be lucky to see one a month. A DVR system is far more likely to lose footage due to:
- A failing hard drive or SD card
- Corrupted filesystem after unexpected power loss
- Camera signal interference
- Software bugs in the recorder itself
- Overheating or cheap power supply
ECC helps if your system is doing scientific simulations or running financial trading algorithms but for surveillance video? The bottleneck is always the storage and the cameras, not transient memory errors.
Spend the money on a good hard drive and a UPS that can safely shut down the DVR. That will actually prevent recording errors.
