Electric pumps are safe — just don't walk away

Using an electric air pump on a thin PVC pool float is perfectly safe as long as you’re watching it and you stop at the right firmness.

The risk isn’t the pump, it’s you leaving it alone. Electric pumps move a lot of air fast. A thin float will go from “nice and full” to “about to burst” in seconds. The PVC doesn’t explode like a balloon — it just finds a weak seam and splits. That’s a ten-dollar float ruined because you went to grab another drink.

So the rule is simple: keep the pump in one hand and your eyes on the float. When it looks full and feels firm but still has a little give — like a slightly overinflated yoga ball — stop. If you’re unsure, stop sooner. These things don’t need to be rock hard to be usable. This is not where you save six bucks.
