Fabric softener ruins your mousepad's glide.

Yes. Fabric softener coats the fibers in a waxy residue that reduces glide, and it’s nearly impossible to wash out completely.

Mousepads — especially cloth ones — rely on a tight weave or microfiber surface for consistent mouse tracking. Fabric softener works by depositing oils and chemicals to soften fabric. Those same deposits fill in the microscopic texture that gives you smooth, low-friction glide. The result feels sticky or sluggish, and even after multiple washes, the surface never returns to original performance.

You’re better off washing with a mild detergent (or just water) and letting it air dry. If you already used softener, try a few hot water soaks with a splash of vinegar, but you might need a new pad anyway.
