Feel the zipper tape — that's the whole trick.

You can tell by touching it: if the zipper tape feels like regular fabric, it’s only water-repellent. If it feels smooth, plasticky, or rubbery, it’s actually water-resistant.

Regular zippers have woven nylon or polyester tape that soaks up water. A water-repellent zipper just has a hydrophobic coating sprayed or applied on top — water beads up at first, but the moment the coating wears off or you sit in a downpour for a while, that tape gets wet and water seeps through. It’s a treatment, not a seal.

A genuinely water-resistant zipper — usually something like YKK Aquaseal — is built differently. The tape is fused with a thin polyurethane film during manufacturing, so the fabric itself can’t absorb water. The giveaway is the feel and look: it’s smooth and slightly shiny, almost like the lining of a rain jacket, not something you’d sew into a regular pair of jeans.

Quick check: run your fingers across the tape on the inside of the backpack. Fabric = repellent. Smooth rubbery film = resistant. And if a brand is vague about it, they’re selling you the spray-on version.

If the zipper tape feels like a rain jacket, you’re good. If it feels like a t-shirt, assume it leaks.
