First Rolling Stones Album to Go Platinum: Some Girls (1978)

The first Rolling Stones album to be certified Platinum by the RIAA was Some Girls, released in June 1978. It achieved that milestone on October 24, 1978, just a few months after its release.

The RIAA didn’t introduce the Platinum certification until 1976, meaning earlier Stones albums like Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main St. sold millions but had to be retroactively certified later. Some Girls was the first to cross the million-seller mark while the system was running, thanks to the massive appeal of singles like “Miss You” and “Beast of Burden.” It went on to sell over six million copies in the U.S. alone.
