Fix alkalinity before pH, not the other way around.

The best way to balance pool alkalinity is to test it, then raise it with baking soda or lower it with muriatic acid, and do this before you mess with pH.

Alkalinity is your pool’s buffer. It keeps pH from bouncing around every time a kid jumps in or it rains. The sweet spot is 80–120 ppm. If it’s low, pH swings wildly. If it’s high, pH gets stubborn and won’t move. So get alkalinity right first, then tweak pH.

Raising is easy: add sodium bicarbonate (that’s plain baking soda). Lowering takes muriatic acid, and yes, it’s a bit scary, but measure carefully, pour slowly in front of a return, and keep the pump running. Don’t dump it all at once — wait a few hours, retest, and repeat. A pool calculator will tell you the exact amount based on your pool size and current reading.

You don’t need a lab. Just a good test kit, patience, and small adjustments. Chasing perfect numbers every
