For Big Appetites, Go Big: 1.5 Liters or More

For a large appetite or serious meal prep, you want a lunch box around 1.5 to 2 liters — bigger than the standard “large” bento.

Most lunch boxes are built for the average person: 500 to 800 ml total. That’s fine if you’re having a normal sandwich and a snack. But if you’re packing a full protein, a grain, and two sides, you’re already pushing past a liter. Meal prep makes it worse because you’re packing all components in one container, and nobody wants green beans crammed under a chicken thigh.

The two things to check before buying: volume and compartments. Volume is the number one priority — go 1.5 liters minimum if you’re a big eater, and 2 liters if you’re meal-prepping dense stuff like rice bowls or breakfasts. Then think about how the space is divided. I prefer two compartments over three, because three gets fiddly and you end up with one tiny pocket that does nothing useful. You want a big main zone and a second zone for saucy stuff or sides.

Also, think about your bag. A 2-liter box looks like a shoebox. If you bike or carry a small backpack, that hunk of plastic will eat your whole day. So measure your typical meal before you buy: pack it in whatever you have, pour it into a measuring cup, and get a box close to that volume with a little extra room. Don’t rely on “large” labels — they lie.

Your lunch should not require a second lunch.
