For lunch salads, get a separate dressing pot

Skip the built-in dressing well; the best way to carry a salad to work is a container with a small, sealed dressing pot that sits in a corner.

I’ve tried the “dressing well” containers — you know, the ones with a little dip molded into the lid or the side. They look clever, but they’re shallow, they leak if the container tips, and the dressing often ends up touching the leaves anyway. Then you get soggy greens and a messy lunch bag. Not worth it.

What actually works is a bento-style box with a separate screw-top or snap-lid pot that clicks into a dedicated corner. Brands like Sistema and Fitpacker make these, and they’re great. The dressing stays fully sealed, the leaves stay dry, and when you’re ready to eat, you just pour it over and shake. Leak-proof is the key word — read reviews to make sure that pot really seals.

If you prefer glass, that works too. Pyrex or any sturdy glass container with a separate small glass jar (like a 4-ounce mason jar) does the job. Just use a different bag or pack the jar snugly so it doesn’t clatter. The point is simplicity: separate container, dry salad, no soggy disappointment.

Your salad will thank you.
