For studying, get over-ear ANC headphones, not earbuds

For a noisy study space, over-ear active noise-canceling headphones are the right call—not earbuds, not passive isolation.

Earbuds with ANC are getting good, but they can’t beat the physical seal of over-ears. That matters because ANC alone struggles with voices and sudden noises—those are mid-frequency, and the cancellation tech mostly nails low-end hum like HVAC, traffic, and fans. The over-ear padding blocks the midrange physically, so you get a double defense.

Two things to look for: good ANC for treble and midrange (not just bass), and a snug fit. Don’t chase the most expensive flagship—mid-tier models from Sony, Bose, or Sennheiser are plenty for a library or dorm. Test them with a podcast playing, not music. If you can hear the talking clearly, they’re not enough.

Comfort matters more than specs if you’re sitting for four hours. Check weight and clamping force before you buy. Also, make sure they can run wired with ANC on, because battery death always happens during finals week.

Your brain will thank you.
