For tracking accuracy, desk pads and mousepads are basically the same.
Not really, unless you’re a competitive esports player or doing precision work at a super high DPI.
Modern optical and laser sensors are good enough that they track just fine on most smooth, consistent surfaces. A desk pad is just a giant mousepad—same material, same texture, same tracking performance. The difference is surface area and what else you put on your desk, not how well the cursor moves.
Where you might notice a difference is if your desk pad has a weird texture or is uneven. But a quality desk pad from a known brand? Identical tracking to a smaller dedicated pad. The small one is more portable; the big one gives you more room and can be more comfortable for resting your arm. Accuracy? Neither one has an edge.
If you want more desk space, get the big pad. If you want to keep things minimal and bring your mouse with you, get the small one. Tracking accuracy is a non-issue.
