Forget the drink pocket—get a lunch box with a built-in ice pack
Yes, they exist, but the separate drink pocket is mostly a marketing feature—the real cooling comes from a dedicated ice pack that sits directly on top of the food.
The “separate section for a cold drink” you see on most insulated lunch bags is just a mesh or stretchy side pocket. It doesn’t cool anything. It just holds a bottle in place. If your drink isn’t already cold, it stays warm. If it is cold, it stays slightly less cold than it would in a good thermos, but only because the surrounding bag has some insulation.
What actually works is a lunch box with a built-in freezer pack. Bentgo and a few other brands make hard-sided or hybrid containers with a removable gel pack that clips into the lid, right above your food. That’s effective because cold sinks, and the ice pack sits above everything, keeping the whole box at fridge temperature for a few hours. The packIt bags take a different approach—the entire bag is made of freezeable gel, so the walls themselves are the ice. Those work great but are bulky and need freezer space overnight.
The verdict: if you want to keep a drink cold, use an insulated bottle, not a side pocket. If you want your food cold, get a lunch box with a lid-mounted ice pack or a freezable bag. The separate “cold drink section” alone is not going to cut it.
Pick the one where the ice pack actually touches your food, not your water bottle.
