Foundation SPF isn't enough.
Yes, you still need a separate sunscreen.
The SPF number on your foundation or BB cream is tested in a lab with a very specific application: a thick, even layer. Realistically, you’re not slathering your face with two milligrams of foundation per square centimeter — that’s the amount needed for the labeled protection. You’re dabbing, blending, and probably using way less.
Plus most makeup SPF tops out at SPF 15 or 20. Derms recommend at least SPF 30 for daily wear, and SPF 50 for prolonged sun exposure. And you’re not reapplying your foundation every two hours, are you? Sunscreen needs reapplication.
So layer a dedicated sunscreen under your makeup. It’s not hard, it’s not greasy anymore (good options exist for all skin types), and it’s the only way to actually protect your skin. Foundation SPF is a nice bonus, not a replacement.
