Free your desk with two cheap moves
A monitor arm and a vertical file sorter are the two best techniques for reclaiming desk space in a small home office.
The monitor arm is the single highest-impact change. Lifting your monitor off the desk instantly frees up a giant rectangle of space. You can push your keyboard back when not typing, or just have room for a coffee cup without knocking things over. Get one with built-in cable management so the mess becomes invisible. Don’t cheap out – a wobbly arm will drive you crazy.
The vertical file sorter is for the active papers you actually touch. Not the archive stuff, not the “I’ll file this someday” pile – just the current week’s docs. Put it on the wall beside your desk or on a shelf above eye level. That keeps papers accessible but off your work surface. The whole point is your desk stays clear for the keyboard, mouse, and maybe a notebook. Everything else goes vertical.
Together these two moves eliminate the two main desk hogs: the monitor base and the horizontal paper pile. Took me about an hour to install both, and I’ve never looked back.
Your desk should hold your keyboard and your coffee – nothing else needs to live there.
