Freeze your water bottles, not ice packs.

Freeze your water bottles and use them as ice packs—they keep food cold all day and give you cold water later.

The trick is to think of your lunchbox as a cooler with layers. Freeze two or three full water bottles the night before. Put them at the bottom of an insulated lunch bag, then set your food on top. Pack the food tight so there’s less empty air to warm up. Add one more frozen bottle on top if you have room. Everything stays below 40°F for a good six to eight hours, often longer in an insulated bag.

Skip ice packs if you can. They thaw, take up space, and you can’t drink them. Frozen bottles do double duty. Same logic works for frozen juice boxes.

One warning: some foods get weird when they freeze or get too cold. Put cheese, meats, and fruit in a separate small bag and don’t let them touch the frozen bottles directly. And keep the whole packed bag out of the sun—shade helps way more than you’d think.

That’s it. Cold lunch, cold water, no soggy mess.
