Freezer packs do the real work
Freezer packs do the real work.
Whether you use a hard insulated lunch box or a soft lunch bag, the freezer pack is doing most of the work.
The insulated box only slows down heat transfer. It doesn’t create cold. A thick, well-sealed lunch box will hold cold longer than a flimsy bag, but neither one keeps yogurt safe for six hours on its own. The pack is what actually pulls the temperature down and keeps it there.
The real difference between a box and a bag is insulation quality and how well it seals. A cheap “insulated” box with thin walls and a loose lid is worse than a decent soft bag with a good pack. A high-quality hard box with thick insulation and a tight seal is better — but only if you add a pack anyway.
So don’t treat it as either/or. Get whatever shape you like carrying, spend a little extra on a decent freezer pack (or two), and you’re set.
Don’t overthink it — a good pack fixes most lunch box sins.
