Ice packs work because they’re full of water. Water absorbs a ton of heat before it melts, so it keeps things cold for hours. A lunch box is mostly foam and fabric—light, airy, and useless at storing cold. Sure, it’ll feel chilly when you pull it out of the freezer, but that cold is gone within minutes once you put food inside.

You also risk damaging the lining, zipper, or seams when the material freezes and flexes. Not worth it.

The easy fix: throw a frozen water bottle or a proper gel pack in your lunch box. That does the job, and your actual lunch box stays undamaged. If you’re desperate and want something big, freeze water in a sealed plastic container and use that.

Save the freezer space for actual food.
