From The Tea Set to The Pink Floyd Sound: The band's early name evolution

Before they were Pink Floyd, the band played under the name The Tea Set. That’s the name Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright used when they first started gigging around London in 1965. The problem? They’d show up to a venue and find another band called The Tea Set already booked. So they needed a quick swap.

Syd Barrett pulled the name from his record collection — a blues album by Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. He mashed them into The Pink Floyd Sound. The “Sound” got dropped within a year, and the “The” vanished soon after, leaving just Pink Floyd. It’s a name born from pure necessity and a lucky crate-digging moment.
