Frozen grapes are better than ice packs
Frozen fruit is the best no-ice-pack trick for a picnic lunch box.
You don’t need to buy gel packs. Freeze a bag of grapes, berries, or melon balls the night before. In the morning, put them at the bottom of your lunch box, then stack the stuff you want to keep cold — sandwiches, cheese, yogurt — on top. By the time you eat, the fruit has thawed into cold snacks or dessert, and your lunch stayed safe for hours.
For drinks, freeze a juice box or a small water bottle and use it as a cold brick. It keeps your food cool and gives you ice-cold water or juice at lunch. Just don’t fill the bottle all the way, because water expands.
If you want a reusable gel pack without buying one, wet a sponge, squeeze out the excess, seal it in a zip bag, and freeze it. It molds around food better than a block of ice, and you can keep it in the freezer for the next picnic.
The trick is to treat your freezer as part of the packing process, not as an excuse to buy more gear.
