Frozen wood is rough on chainsaws.
Yes, you can cut it, but it’s harder on the saw and you. Frozen wood is denser and more brittle, which means more kickback risk and your chain dulls fast.
If you have to do it, make sure your chain is razor sharp and properly tensioned. Lube up extra — cold weather thickens bar oil, so use a winter-grade or thin it a bit. Go slow, don’t force the saw, and keep both hands on the grips. Kickback is no joke when the wood’s hard and unpredictable.
Also, watch for frozen bark or knots that can grab the chain. Wear all the PPE: chaps, helmet, eye pro. Cold fingers aren’t an excuse to skip safety.
If you can wait for a thaw, do that. Your chain (and your back) will thank you.
