Canvas totes win here. They’re durable, washable, cheap enough to replace, and come in enough colors and patterns that you can find one that matches your vibe. Avoid leather, avoid anything with delicate stitching, and avoid bags with too many pockets — sand finds its way everywhere, and you don’t want to be picking grains out of zippers for the rest of August.

A medium-size tote with a zip-top closure is the sweet spot. Big enough for towels, sunscreen, and a book; small enough that you’re not dragging the entire beach around. If you want to get fancy, add a waterproof liner or a separate wet pocket for your swimsuit. But don’t overthink it.
